YEAR 4

SAFETY SQUAD

On the 23rd April, the RACV Safety Squad visited our school and our students experienced some first-hand safety activities. This ongoing program is very effective in improving the safety educational behaviour of the students on our roads, at school and in the home.

The educational focus was to recognise and practise strategies to promote healthy, safety and positive well-being decisions e.g. “Is it safe to sit in the front seat of the family car, if I’m over 7yrs old?” We reviewed the features of cycling helmets e.g. their material, colour, straps’ position when worn, size of the helmet, the safety and comfort using the two-finger test on your helmet.

Your child has taken part in the RACV Safety Squad Program with their class concerning safety in the home, on the roads as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers.

If you wish to find more safety information to assist your child and family, please refer to

THE MIDNIGHT GANG

As part of the 2021 Education Series, over 500 local students viewed the excellent theatre production at the Shepparton Eastbank, on the 6th May of “The Midnight Gang.” The senior students from our school were part of this audience.

As the clock struck 12, the patients of St. Crook’s Hospital went on some exciting adventures in the name of friendship, love and an extraordinary imagination. We could all relate to this truly excellent performance and the exciting and lively acting was enjoyed by all.

Some of the students’ responses to this performance were:

“They worked together to make this a good play.” (Yousuf, Abbas H., and Mohammad)

“The Midnight Gang goes to the North Pole and a bear comes out from nowhere!” (Abbas D., Ridha and Ali A.)

“The play was fun and funny but there was some silly drama.” (Ajwa, Yasmin and Mahnoor)

“It taught us to be kind to anyone no matter what!” (Riam, Suhayla and Aroozu)

“We got to see what these characters wanted to be in the future.” (Ahmad, Reza and Ayesha)

“Tom found that his parents cared about him!” ( Ali M., Narges and Aleena)

HEALTHY HABITS

We, as parents, must encourage healthy habits for our kids. Here are some reasons for supporting a healthy lifestyle for your child:

It will improve their overall health and fitness.

It will help to maintain a healthy weight.

It improves the quality of sleep.

It builds physical strength.

It aids in the development of motor skills.

It is a relief from stress and anxiety.

Provides improved body image and confidence.

Improves focus and concentration.

Your child will learn teamwork and make new friends.

They will practise important leadership skills.

You can support an active lifestyle for your child by being a positive role model for them and by making healthy habits a family event. Try and focus on food that includes all the colours of a rainbow and choose a physical activity that you know your child will enjoy. Most importantly, set boundaries around screen time.

The weekly STEM sessions are fun times for everyone as the students explore different ways to work together to create models e.g. the tallest tower, a platform. The students loved building their items and had a whole host of ideas to share.

They have discussed and noted the Positive, Minus and the Interesting things about these sessions. The usual response has been that they really like to work together as a group. These are fun and challenging times with everyone giving these activities a go.

STEM is an educational approach that teaches students about the four subjects, i.e. science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Year 4’s are the first to try this and hopefully more upper primary classes will join in.

The above listed activities are all designed to engage students in the engineering designing process, to communicate effectively in their teams and to use their collaboration, creative and critical thinking skills.

During this term, the students had the opportunity to do a virtual workshop on “No Bullying.” These were engaged in using their virtual reality devices to watch a story on bullying. They discussed the story and the characters involved and could easily observe the bully and victim in action and were able to solve problems relating to both.

Being dressed in their Harmony Day colours and costumes, and their casual day clothing to raise funds for the Year 6’s T-shirts. has added to an interesting and fun time term for all.
